About Our Retreat Leaders

alyssa pfennig
certified yoga therapist

Alyssa is passionate about sharing the therapeutic wisdom of yoga to help others nourish their path to wholeness. She has practiced yoga for over 15 years and was inspired to become a teacher after sharing the practice with her young niece.

Drawn to the therapeutic use of yoga practices that helped her with an injured shoulder and manage work stress, she spent three years immersed in the study of therapeutic yoga through the Yoga on High Teacher Training Institute in Columbus, Ohio. She has trained in using yoga practices such as asana, pranayama and meditation, to help with structural, mental and emotional issues and will help you make every pose accessible and comfortable in a group class or design a personal yoga program specific to your needs.

For the past three years, Alyssa has assisted in research studies on using yoga to manage chronic pain and PTSD with veterans in conjunction with the VA Medical Center and also works one-on-one with patients in a specialized clinic at Eskenazi Health. She is an E-RYT 200/RYT 500 with the Yoga Alliance and a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). She is also certified in enzyme nutrition with the Food Enzyme Institute and certified in Thai Yoga Massage.

Rita is a certified Health Coach by the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and in love about healthy cooking, wellness, writing and sharing information about healthy living.

Her personal struggle with a sick childhood in Brazil, her native country, with pneumonia, allergies and a low immune system motivated her to research and implement a variety of holistic approaches into her lifestyle. Her research began as young as 12 years old, learning to heal her body using natural and alternative medicine, herbs, vitamins and food.

A combined interest in human behavior and communication led her to work for more than 15 years in marketing for the fashion industry and later in life she decided to follow her first passion, study to become a health coach and share what she has learned with others so that they can find relief in their lives as well.

I began this journey to offer people a place to come and escape their fast paced daily lives. Through the years, I have been able to bring unwanted and forgotten horses here to their forever home. With the horses we can obtain a calm that's lost in today's society. The goal is to get back to core values and share with our guests, everything from soil conservation and land management to the relationship between equine and human. Although the day to day responsibilities in caring for horses is vast, the rewards that come from this hard work will last a lifetime.

Horses have been in my life as far back as I can remember. They bring me so much joy. They have always been the greatest comfort for my soul. The Sunka Wakan (horse) is the best medicine for me.

I enjoy sharing all that I know of the horse with my visitors to the farm and my goal is to help create lasting memories for all of you. Thank you for your support of The Equestrian Experience!

I have dedicated my life to rescuing and rehabilitating animals. The bond I have built with them is something I wish to share with all of my students. When you take care of the animals, they take care of you. I have built my curriculum to instill the responsibilities of taking care of the animals, to ride with complete confidence in the partnership you build. I have been sharing my knowledge with students for over 20 years. I am looking forward to the next 20.
